Frequently asked questions

What is the history of Polyglot Club?

The Polyglot Club has been operating in Canberra since the 1980s. We do not offer tuition but rather the opportunity for people to practice a second language at minimal cost. The ANU has been our host all this time.

What level of proficiency is required?

Members are proficient at all levels from beginners to native speakers. We encourage new members to come along and see if they feel comfortable before committing to joining.

What is the cost?

The annual membership fee is $20 for people in the workforce and $10 for students, retirees and others on limited incomes. These fees are collected once each year around the time of our Annual General Meeting.

One or more languages?

A few members speak more than one of these languages and like to move between the groups. However, most of us know only one other language and participate in just the one group.

Other languages?

From time to time we are approached about having languages other than these and we would consider adding to the list provided the proponents can get a core group of participants. It is necessary to have at least 3-4 people willing to make a weekly commitment for a group to be viable.
